Got Vinegar?

by The My Renters Guide Team
August 6th, 2012

Over the years, there have been a number of new products that are ‘eco-friendly’, which is a major change taking place in society. The only downside to this is when the word ‘better’ is used (better for your health, better for the environment, better gas mileage) we typically see the price increase. When it comes to cleaning products, they are full of toxic chemicals, so going green is a great idea! Guess what, you can start saving your money just by opening up your kitchen cupboards and voilà! Grab that bottle of White Distilled Vinegar and your set!

Tips and tricks you can use next time you clean: (2 main ingredients- Vinegar and water!)
(First thing first- whatever you do, DO NOT use White Distilled Vinegar (WDV) on marble!)
Shower Grime, Scum and Mildew- Wipe undiluted WDV in your tub, on the tile and the curtain/door. Rinse off with water.
Clean Grout- Spray full strength WDV on the floor. Let it sit a few minutes, and then scrub the grout with an old toothbrush.
Tile Cleaner- Use ½ cup baking soda, 1 cup WDV, 1 cup ammonia per gallon of warm water.
Toilet Bowl Shiner-Pour 1+ cups of WDV in the bowl. Let it sit overnight then scrub and flush!
Clean/Shiny no-wax vinyl/linoleum floor- Mix 1 cup WDV with 1 gallon of water.
Imitation wood Floor Cleaner- Mix 1 cup WDV with 1 gallon of water. Spray floor, then wipe (don’t saturate the floor & don’t let water sit long).
Pet Accidents- 1st-blot area with a dry cloth, then add WDV & water solution. Blot again till almost dry. Finish off by sprinkling baking soda over the area. Let sit for 24 hrs and then vacuum the residue.
Kill Germs- spray full strength WDV on doorknobs then wipe them dry.

Tips and tricks for your Vehicle:
Hazy film buildup on windows-  Spray/wipe with WDV.
Car Carpet/Rug Stain Remover-1/2 WDV and ½ water.
Keep Windows Frost Free- Coat window with 3 parts WDV, 1 part water.
Remove Winter Salt from Carpet- Spray with ½ WDV ½ water. Blot with a towel.
Remove Car Decals/Stickers- Soak a piece of cloth in WDV and cover the area. Or spray the area with WDV repetitively. Stickers should come off in a few hours.
Remove Gum off Floor/Upholstery- Soak it in WDV.
All Purpose Window Cleaner- Mix few ounces of WDV in a quart of water and spray away!

Tips and Tricks in the Laundry Room:
Brighten Clothes- Add ½ a cup WDV to in the rinse cycle.
Pit Stain/Deodorant Residue Remover- Spray WDV on the underarm & collar area, then throw in the wash.
Moldy Smell Remover- Add 2 cups WDV and wash clothes in hot water. When finished, run a normal cycle with detergent.
Spaghetti/ Sauce Stain Remover-Use WDV and water on the stain, then wash.
Smoke Smell Remover- Fill tub with extremely hot water and add 1 cup of WDV. Hang Clothing above the steam and shut the door to trap the heat. The clothing will suck the steam up and rid the smoky odor.
Stain Remover- Combine milk and water (equivalent measurements). Soak the area & then wash.
Static Guard Clothing- Add ½ a cup of WDV to the wash cycle.

Tips and Tricks for your health:
Fix Bad Breath/Whiten Teeth- Brush your teeth 2 times a week with WDV.
Sunburn Soother- Use cold WDV and spray on the burn as often as necessary.
Facial Toner- Mix WDV and water (equal proportions).
Aftershave- Dab WDV on your face after shaving (should cure aftershave rashes/itching)
Foot Odor Eliminator- Wash feet with antiseptic soap daily. Soak feet in Cider Vinegar for 10 minutes.
Itching/ Sting preventer- Dab the site with WDV.
Antiseptic (scrapes/cuts)- Dab the area with undistilled WDV.

Based on research, by adding any type of vinegar to your daily diet can help with curbing your appetite, prevent weight gain and obesity, and ward off diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. A few other possible health benefits (this area still needs more research performed) are reduced risk of heart disease and lowers cholesterol.
After looking through this short list, think of all the individual products you have used and the money you have spent. Low and behold, this one product, which costs roughly $3.00, can replace all of those products!

What other products are you aware of that serve multiple purposes? Feel free to share any of your money saving tips and tricks!
